Stafford is an unincorporated community in Clackamas County, classified by the county as a hamlet. It covers roughly 3,900 acres in a rough triangle south of Lake Oswego, east of Tualatin and west of West Linn.
In the 1860s, the area was named Stafford after a settler's hometown of Stafford, Ohio. The community's first school, Stafford School, opened in 1892.
In November 2006, Stafford residents voted to form a hamlet, a Clackamas County model of local governance that gives an unincorporated community an organized voice without becoming a city.
The Hazelia area, just north of the Tualatin River, was first settled by Oregon Trail emigrants in the 1850s. The Hazelia Agri-Cultural Heritage Trail, with interpretive panels within the Stafford Hamlet, opened in 2017.
